The Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge is an affordable Florida Keys campground, where you’ll enjoy the nature of the Keys without punching a big hole in your wallet.
Get back to nature at the family-owned Pine Lodge, located about 30 miles from Key West and less than ten miles south of Marathon, it’s within a half hours drive of the Florida Keys two biggest tourist attractions.
And the lodge is also within a couple of miles of Bahia Honda State Park. Rated as one of the best State Parks in the country with the best beaches in the islands. The campground sits on a oceanside inlet which was made when dredging the Spanish Harbour Channel to allow access for Flagler’s Railway.
Florida Keys Camping
Campsites range from truly rustic grass or dirt tent sites without water or electricity to full hooks at the dockside sites. Select a waterfront site, if it’s available!
The ground’s entrance is gated, providing a sense of security. Another one of the great things about this place they really try to provide for the traveling fisherman. With moorings for boats up to 25 feet long for a per-foot daily charge.
The lodge covers all the basics. There are Bathrooms and shared showers that are cleaned daily, the one thing they do not scrimp on is cleanliness. Laundry facilities, a rec room, a COOL roof top pool, a well stocked and fairly priced grocery store.
The fishing Lodge store is very well stocked – from camping supplies and grills to groceries and fishing gear and very reasonably pricing. The store has been painstakingly outfitted over the years from a most wanted list, supplied by their customers. NOW…that’s customer service. It is that relaxed and helpful way of doing things that really make this campsite a delight.
In case you need anything else there’s a Winn Dixie supermarket, less than 10 minutes away, at the Winn Dixie Shopping Center on Big Pine Key.
You’ll find the overall atmosphere at the pine lodge very nice, relaxing, and friendly. The place is big enough so it is never overcrowded and people are constantly out barbecuing, lounging, and enjoying the great Florida Keys weather.
A few tips are in order if pitching a tent- these coral islands have rock hard ground and an air mattress or sleeping mat is a “must have” along with a hammer and strong metal stakes to penetrate the ground when securing your tent. You’ll probably be bringing along a grill or stove, which is a great idea because there are no fire rings allowed due to Monroe County laws.
If you would rather not rough it not to worry, the camp ground has very nice rental trailers and lodge rooms with lofts and kitchens available, at below the usual lower keys hotel rates.
Miniature Key Deer
You have probably already heard about the miniature Key Deer. Don’t be surprised to see one of the local deer pay you a visit, they are very friendly.
They often walk right through your campsite and grab your food – the little buggers. If not you can go down to the Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine to observe them in their habitat.
Plan to fish the Keys? With a boat ramp on-site and waterfront camp sites the fishing lodge is a great place to enjoy the Keys without spending a lot of money.
