The Duval crawl
Or, have you ever done “the Duval crawl” on Duval Street in “Old Town”, with all of its history and flavor? Its a partying experience that has to be experienced, to be believed!
First on your list of things to do in Key West should be to take a tour on the Conch Tour Train or the Old Town Trolley. Its a great hassle-free way to see all the historic landmarks, The Ernest Hemmingway House, Harry S.Trumans’s…Little White House, the Southern Most Point Monument, and the Key West Shipwreck museum where you can back in times of Spanish Explorers, pirates and ship wreckers. The magical Maritime history will captivate you !
A tropical Vacation would not be complete without getting out on the water and doing a little snorkeling. Home to North Americans only living coral reef, these beautiful waters will lure you to explore natural coral formations, coral-encrusted ship wrecks, and an abundance of colourful tropical fish. Much of the reef is great for snorkeling because of its many shallow patches.
While on vacation enjoy the Key West beaches.
Surprising so, Key West has a limited number of beaches. The Florida Keys were once coral reefs with barrier islands inhibiting wave action, and with very little sand to begin with, sandy beaches are a bit scarce. There are some great opportunities to get in some beach time, and with small coral reef formations everywhere, some very good inshore snorkeling.
South Beach…. it’s a favorite of the locals and visitors alike. Being one of the sandiest beach in the southernmost city, it is tucked between hotels and a concrete pier, which is a good spot to start your inshore snorkeling excursions, you will enjoy !
Smathers Beach….On the south shore of the island is Smathers Beach, the islands largest Beach. Vendors, concessions, beach sport rentals are all along S.Roosevelt Blvd for beach rentals, food and drinks. Snorkeling zones are located just offshore for some snorkeling.
Fort Zachary Taylor Beach Park….This beach is considered the best beach. It is a place to snorkel and witness some of the larger species of marine life, like giant Devil Rays and big Tarpon. This is a National Park so there is a small entry fee, but with the Historic Fort, picnic tables, concessions, and shade trees, its well worth it.
Things to do in Key West would not be complete without mentioning Key West Fishing. Tarpon are right in the Harbor and the reefs are home to many species of Snappers and Groupers, to name just a few. Offshore there are Sailfish, Marlin, Mahi-Mahi(Dolphin), Wahoo, Kingfish, Barracuda, you get the picture. The IGFA has established The Florida Keys as the angling destination that holds the most Saltwater Fishing World Records, ANYWHERE !
Besides all of the activities previously mentioned, try para-sailing, rent jet-skis, boats, kayaks, bikes, scooters. I guarantee you won’t be bored !
While on you Key West Vacation there are tons of things to do in Key West !
